Food labeling and consumer knowledge are essential in supporting mental awareness and informed food choices that enhance public health. A label that is accurate and transparent gives consumers the ability to understand nutrient content, ingredients, portion sizes, and allergens, which allows for healthier choices. Similarly, food labeling consumers are able to use and understand while following a specialized diet or on the lookout for harmful nutrients. Food labels can also be useful for identifying functional/fortified foods. The purpose of this session is to develop labeling regulations and best practices for conveying labeling information to consumers regarding enhancing consumers understanding and those using the food label. Participants will gain an understanding of how proper labeling and educational initiatives can facilitate healthy behaviors and better nutrition literacy across populations.
